New Google fiber optic broadband projects has a lot of participants

Google’s highly adventitious high speed fibre optic broadband project is in testing phase and a lot of communities are opting to be a part of this move by Google and Urbana is amongst one of them. The announcement was made by The Urbana City Council which said in a meeting on Monday, March 15, 2010 that the city will be a part of the Google Fiber Broadband Project.

Though the Council is not sure whether it will spend the grant money from the Federal Government or not. Anyway, the program is federally funded and it seeks to connect important institutions that are required for the development of the community as a whole and some 4600 homes in low-income neighborhood and provide them with high speed internet access, provided they wish to be part of the program and utilize the service properly.

And even if the council decides not to use the money funded by the centre, it is highly likely that Google wouldn’t require additional funds as it may link/associate its Fiber Optic broadband project to provide high speed internet services to Champaign-Urbana community.

Google is accepting applications for its highly adventitious high speed fiber optic broadband services from economically and culturally diverse communities till March 26, 2010. In case of Urbana community, getting all the information as desired by Google could be a little time consuming but the council is trying its best to speed up the entire process.

The recommendation came as a result of a study it carried with ICM in which it was found that some businesses would rather shift to those areas and premises which offered better broadband services with faster speeds.

The aim is to get the government to device policies for strengthening the broadband infrastructure in the country, especially for the small and medium businesses who seen to be losing a lot of opportunities due to the inadequate broadband services.

Moreover, Federation of Small Businesses has voiced its another recommendation that the broadband services provider should make sure that they provide the businesses a minimum speed of 8mega bytes per second, direct to their office premises. At present the average speed is 4mega bytes per second and almost one-third population if the country doesn’t have access to proper broadband services.
