The announcement was made by The Urbana City Council which said in a meeting on Monday, March 15, 2010 that the city will be a part of the Google Fiber Broadband Project.

Though the Council is not sure whether it will spend the grant money from the Federal Government or not. Anyway, the program is federally funded and it seeks to connect important institutions that are required for the development of the community as a whole and some 4600 homes in low-income neighborhood and provide them with high speed internet access, provided they wish to be part of the program and utilize the service properly.

And even if the council decides not to use the money funded by the centre, it is highly likely that Google wouldn’t require additional funds as it may link/associate its Fiber Optic broadband project to provide high speed internet services to Champaign-Urbana community.

Google is accepting applications for its highly adventitious high speed fiber optic broadband services from economically and culturally diverse communities till March 26, 2010. In case of Urbana community, getting all the information as desired by Google could be a little time consuming but the council is trying its best to speed up the entire process.

BT allows Infrastructure sharing with Rivals

BT has recently announced that it will allow its rivals to use their underground ducts for the faster development of super fast broadband all across UK. It says that if this will be possible then every home in UK will be able to have high speed internet.

The Conservative party has also agreed with this plan and the rivals such as Talk Talk BSkyB and other European movements have readily agreed for free access. Shadow Minister for culture, media and sport, Jeremy Hunt had stated that this step will break BT’s control for providing nationwide broadband with a target speed of 100mbps and agreed that the admission to ducts would allow an easier and effortless market to carry out.

When BT had a discussion with Ofcom they also said that they want other companies also to allow access to their rivals and only then BT would be allowed. Thus BT is now urging other companies to do so as this would prove very effective for the country. Now the question lies that do the rivals really want other to use their ducts. The answer is that they will have as the urban market seems pretty attractive for getting more customers.
